The villain’s track, “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” is the most overrated of the lot in THE TINY Mermaid perhaps, begging for further consistency in circulation or, at the very least, a trim. The comedy piece “Les Poissons” mocks the French chef with an accordion and amusing performance by Rene Auberjonois. Rounding out the tunes is “Kiss the lady,” a wonderful and romantic version on the calypso soul of “Beneath the Sea” as soon as again highlighted by Wright’s performance.

You have to love the trumpet addition by the end to suggest the “buy in” of the prince. Both “Beneath the Sea” and “Kiss the lady” were nominated for Oscars for “Best Song,” setting some precedent for both Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin receiving multiple-song nominations a piece.

The single trumpet that Menken uses to represent the above-water sea-faring folk is a good example of a fantastic choice of style that is betrayed by an ultra-dry recording and flimsy support from background elements. For aficionados with advanced editing and enhancing software on their computer systems, the addition of some reverb can be an absolute must when making your compilations of music from THE TINY Mermaid.

Only the vocals in “Fathoms Below” plus some of the percussion in “Jig” seem to exhibit a fully immersive sound. With so many overdubs to the two-calypso tunes, a bragging point for the producers of the film, the smooth sound quality is inexcusable incredibly. Menken claims that his role in the recording ends with the performance, so he can’t be blamed for the issues on the album. Aside from the original 1989 CD release of 20 tracks, Disney re-pressed the same contents in the mid-1990’s with a modified cover.

In 2006, to coincide with the DVD release of the film, Disney provided a “Special Edition” 2-CD set that contains no additional Menken or Ashman material. Instead, only obnoxious, totally hideous cover variations of the four most popular songs are given (these were part of the feature of the second “bonus” half of the DVD as well). The first CD in the place contains the same exact contents without the courtesy of a remastering. Having less a remix of the experts on that recording was unexpected given the similar work done for the music in the film itself.

The 2014 “Legacy Collection” for THE TINY Mermaid certainly accomplishes a very important factor: it permits greater respect to be given to Menken for writing a far more intelligent underscore than the last albums exposed outside of the film. A substantial amount of uncovered music is designed for the first time here, and the amount of newly interesting sequences is significant. 3.48 (in 58,125 votes).
